THE IMPORTANCE OF GOD’S PRESENCE

TEXT: “And when the people came into the camp, the elders of Israel said, ‘Why has the LORD smitten us today before the Philistines? Let us fetch the ark of the covenant of the LORD out of Shiloh unto us, that, when it comes among us, it may save us out of the hand of our enemies.'” (1 Samuel 4:3)
The presence of God is not something that can be dispensed with in our day-to-day lives as believers. From our considered text, one of the important facts that can be gleaned is that the Israelites were very complacent while going into battle against the Philistines. They failed to take any significant step in inviting God to go into the battle with them. It was customary in those days to carry the ark of the covenant to significant places or events, as it was seen as a symbol of protection or guidance. However, the children of Israel were so confident and negligent in this particular battle that they believed in their own strength and might, and they ultimately failed. When the battle commenced, about 4,000 foot soldiers were brutalized. That was when the Israelites knew they were ill-equipped spiritually. They then arranged for the ark of God to be brought into the camp, but unfortunately, it was too late, as the foundation for disaster and catastrophe had already been laid by their act of nonchalance. Even after the ark was brought into the camp, another 30,000 soldiers were killed, thereby ending their chances of victory. The above experience reiterates the importance of seeking God before any event. God is always interested in every aspect of our lives, including those parts that we deem too trivial and insignificant.
