THE WAYS OF GOD V THE WAYS OF MAN: TRUSTING IN GOD’S SOVEREIGNTY AND WISDOM
MARCH 17, 2025
TEXT: And when the LORD saw that Leah was hated, He opened her womb: but Rachael was barren. (Genesis 29:31)
Yesterday, we discussed how the ways of God often differs from the ways of men. God is an highly unpredictable God and doesn’t often come the way we expect Him to.
Today, we shall be rounding up the discussion by taking a look at how God demonstrated his uniqueness and sovereignty in the lives of certain biblical heroes and heroines of faith.
✅Moses: Two profound incidents happened to Moses that perfectly encapsulate the sovereignty of God. The first was at Rephidim, (Exodus 17).
where the Israelites murmured against Moses due to thirst. God instructed Moses to strike the rock and it will yield it’s water. The Man of God did so and the Israelites got water. Unfortunately, the same episode repeated itself in the Wilderness of Zin (*Numbers 20)
and Moses expected God to operate the way He did at Rephidim. However, God changed His approach this time around by instructing Moses to *”speak to*”, rather than *”strike”* the rock. However, We don’t know what came upon Brother Moses. Either because of the frustration from the Israelites, or because of being seemingly over-familiar with God. He struck the rock twice and the result was that he misses out of the opportunity to enter the promised land.
This might look somewhat harsh, but coming from the Sovereign God, we can only agree that He does things as he pleases. Specific obedience to the instructions of God is quite pivotal to enjoying a stable relationship with Him. The fact that we had a problem in the past and God tackled it in one way does not mean He will still tackle it in that same way if it repeats itself in your life or in the life of someone else. Never become seemingly too familiar with the ways of God.
✅Joseph: Joseph’s brothers thought they had it all figured out. They said: ” here comes this dreamer; let us kill him, and we will see what becomes of his dreams” (Genesis 37:19-20). Thank God Reuben, and later Judah, were on ground to prevent Joseph from being killed. Rather, they all agreed (without Reuben’s knowledge) to sell him to the ishmaelites, rejoicing that they have finally gotten rid of their enemy. Unfortunately, God manifested himself in the life of Joseph by treading a path which no man will ever expect Him to tread. He took Joseph first from being a domestic servant to becoming a prisoner and finally, to the place of his elevation and honour, the PALACE! (Genesis 39,40,41).
Joseph’s case typically portrays how God can operate in a man’s life in a way no man can predict.
