SATAN IS HIDING BEHIND HER: JOSEPH (2)

TEXT: Genesis 39:7-13
KEY VERSE: And she caught him by his garment, saying, Lie with me: and he left his garment in her hand, and fled, and got him out. Genesis 39:12
Joseph, the favoured son of Jacob, found himself in a predicament when the wife of Potiphar, the Egyptian captain of the guard, attempted to seduce him. In that moment, Joseph had a choice: give in to temptation or remain true to God. Though Potiphar’s wife appeared beautiful and desirable, Joseph knew that succumbing to her advances would violate God’s commands and jeopardise his faith. But unlike Samson, Joseph was able to resist the temptation.
While it may seem like Potiphar’s wife was the source of the temptation, the true adversary was Satan. Just like in Samson’s case, Satan used the desires and weaknesses of Potiphar’s wife to tempt Joseph into sin. But unlike Samson, Joseph understood that Satan’s schemes can come in many forms, not just in the form of a beautiful woman. He knew that sin not only violated God’s commands but also brought ruin and destruction.
When Potiphar’s wife caught hold of Joseph’s garment, he knew that he had to act quickly to avoid falling into sin. He left his garment in her hand and fled the scene, choosing to preserve his integrity at the cost of his own dignity. In the same way, we must be willing to make sacrifices in order to flee from temptation. We must distance ourselves from the sources of temptation in our lives, whether that means avoiding certain types of music, videos, or websites, or disengaging from sinful social media groups.
Beloved in Christ, in the story of Joseph, we see the importance of resisting temptation. He recognised Satan’s hand in the seduction of Potiphar’s wife, and he fled to preserve his integrity. We too must be vigilant against temptation, understanding that it is ultimately the work of Satan. Just as Joseph fled, we must run away from temptation, even if it means making sacrifices or facing uncomfortable situations. We must rely on God’s strength and wisdom to resist the lures of this world.
Let us not be caught in the traps of temptation, but flee from them with the same courage and faithfulness that Joseph displayed. As we conclude this study, I encourage you to seek God’s guidance in recognising and fleeing from temptation.
SEARCH LIGHT: Fleeing from temptation, even at personal cost, is the better choice than falling into sin.
PRAYER: Heavenly Father, please give me the courage and wisdom to flee from temptation, even when it seems difficult or impossible.
