TOPIC: LET US ARISE AND BUILD (1)

TEXT: Then I told them of the hand of my God which was good upon me; as also the king’s words that he had spoken unto me. And they said, Let us rise up and build. So they strengthened their hands for this good work. (Nehemiah 2:18)

This topic emphasises the need for believers to rise to the occasion when the things of God are involved. Israel had been invaded by enemies, and Nehemiah, one of the captives, became a cupbearer in the palace of King Artaxerxes in Shushan. On a certain day, it occurred that Nehemiah maintained an unhappy countenance, which the king instantly detected. The king developed an interest in what Nehemiah was passing through, and that marked the beginning of divine restoration. The king ultimately gave Nehemiah the freedom to go ahead and rebuild the destroyed walls of Jerusalem. He bore the burden of his people and his homeland in mind. He looked to God to help him, and automatically, a king who was probably not so easy to convince suddenly became flexible and easily released Nehemiah to go and rebuild the walls.

KEY POINTS

  1. Before taking any step, our faith must be strong. Action without requisite faith is unlikely to produce any tangible result.
  2. Prepare for mockery, ridicule, and contempt. They will surely come. People tend to mock those who engage in certain adventures and assignments that are seemingly unclear to people, but when the result comes forth, they will be automatically silenced.
  3. Every form of success or excellence must commence with a step. Don’t let fear of failure plague you and keep you stagnant.
  4. Our confidence must be in God, and we have no business whatsoever with what those around are saying or opining. God has certainly called you and me to various offices or assignments. It doesn’t necessarily have to be pastoral in nature. We all have various spiritual endeavours into which God has specially called us. We should remain firm and ensure that surrounding circumstances and factors do not distract us.

SEARCHLIGHT
The land of Israel was in ruins. The land needed a burden bearer to take up the burden of the land, and Nehemiah filled this gap instantly. We must not remain passive in the midst of societal ruins, especially when there are steps that we can take.

PRAYER
O Lord, help me to be more responsive to societal turbulences around me, in Jesus’ mighty name.

BIBLE READING
Lamentations 1-3, Luke 1.
