TEXT: Matthew 8:23-27

KEY VERSE: And he saith unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then he arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm. (v. 26)

Storms are indispensable occurrences in the life of any believer. No matter how pleasant and rosy life may be, there will surely be storms and challenges. These storms are not meant to break or mar us but to equip us with spiritual survival skills. (James 1:2-4).

Obedience, spirituality, and good nature do not exempt a person from storms. Jesus Christ and His disciples were on the boat when a storm suddenly arose. Jesus was so calm and was even asleep in the midst of the storm, thereby leaving His disciples flabbergasted. They were forced to wake Him and ask why He doesn’t even care that they are perishing. Jesus then woke up, rebuked the winds and the storm, culminating in a great calmness. The disciples had to wonder in awe at this kind of authority which their Master possessed. This miracle showed that Jesus Christ has authority over creation. (Colossians 1:16-17). Nothing is beyond His control, and every stormy situation is under His authority.

KEY FACTS ABOUT STORMS

  1. Storms show us the practical aspect of life. They make us realise that life is not a bed of roses after all.
  2. God can use storms to teach us what we might not be able to learn in comfort and bliss.
  3. God is a very present help in trouble. Silence does not mean abandonment. (Psalm 46:1).
  4. Fear grows in an atmosphere where the storm is pampered instead of being challenged. (Isaiah 41:10). The more you see your storm as a “storm”, the more it tends to overwhelm you. (1 Peter 5:7).

SEARCHLIGHT: Storms educate, rather than destroy. The process may be daunting but, regardless, God is always somewhere there in the storm, and all we need do is to set our gaze on Him.

PRAYERS: O God, deliver me from the storms of life, in Jesus’ mighty name.

BIBLE READING: Genesis 26-28, Acts 9
