A LIFE THAT SURVIVES STORMS

A LIFE THAT SURVIVES STORMS

TEXT: Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: (Matthew 7:24)

Today’s teaching borders on having the right foundation for our lives and existence. In the passage containing our text, Jesus was teaching about the importance of building a solid foundation, alluding to two fictional men who built their houses. One built his house on a very solid rock where strong defence against storms was guaranteed. The other built his house on ordinary sand, and the fall of that house was quite great.

It is important to understand that the true quality of a house is not known during peaceful or dry seasons but during rainy seasons, especially stormy and windy ones capable of bringing down a weak house. In the same vein, the true test of a man’s life is revealed in times of difficulty, showing how well he is able to handle such storms. Whether he handles the storm well or not depends on the nature of the foundation upon which such a life is built.

A life that is premised on the wrong foundation can indeed be fatal. It can lead to wrong decision-making in terms of career choice, marital choice, academic choice, financial matters, etc. Spiritual instability may also become the order of the day. A person may anchor his life on educational qualifications, talent, human approval, wealth, influence, and personal might generally. However, without Christ in the boat, all these foundational elements are, at best, sandy and will not hold fort for you when the time of adversity comes.

A life that is not anchored on a godly foundation will give way to storms. These storms are quite unavoidable. Some may come through hardship, disappointment, temptation, failure, persecution, etc. However, when one builds on a solid foundation, these things will come and pass. They won’t consume or overwhelm you (Isaiah 43:2). God is not promising us a life of ease that has no stormy situations. Rather, He is promising to be with us in such stormy situations, and this protection is better enjoyed when a rock-solid foundation is put in place (Colossians 2:6–7).

Ultimately, Christ labeled those who built on a solid foundation as wise and sagacious, while He described those who built on a sandy foundation as fools and undiscerning fellows. Ask yourself which category you belong to.

SEARCHLIGHT: A life anchored on Christ may face storms, but it will surely pass over.

PRAYERS: O LORD, help me to be deeply rooted in You, and protect me from the storms of life, in Jesus’ mighty name.
