THE SILENT LABOURER

TEXT: Acts 9:27 – “But Barnabas took him and brought him to the apostles and declared unto them how he had seen the Lord in the way, and that he had spoken to him, and how he had preached boldly at Damascus in the name of Jesus.”

Barnabas was not one of the original twelve disciples of our Lord Jesus Christ. He didn’t hold a prominent status initially in the early church; yet, his life epitomized encouragement, generosity, and faithfulness.

The first time we hear about Barnabas is in Acts 4:36, where he is surnamed “son of consolation.” He reportedly sold his land and brought the proceeds to the house of God to support the early church. This man demonstrated a rare level of godliness.

Fast-forward to Paul’s conversion: the apostles were reluctant to welcome him, given his previous status as a persecutor. Barnabas came to the rescue by taking him before the apostles and explaining his conversion experience.

LESSONS FROM THE LIFE OF BARNABAS

He was instrumental to the kingdom without holding a specific post. Many believe that unless they are appointed to a particular office, they cannot serve the Lord.
Be a motivator rather than a critic. Apostle Paul lost patience with John Mark, but Barnabas pleaded for him. This led to a heated argument between Barnabas and Paul (Acts 15:36-40).
Barnabas was a sacrificial giver. Giving is crucial in the kingdom. Barnabas contributed significantly by selling his land and giving the proceeds to the apostles (Acts 4:36, 2 Corinthians 9:6-7).
He recognized the importance of inclusivity and acceptance in the church. Barnabas stepped in to introduce Paul and convince them to accept him (Galatians 2:9-10).
Be faithful in the little that has been committed to your hands. Do your job diligently and expect God’s divine blessings.

SEARCHLIGHT: Barnabas is a perfect example of a devoted Christian, demonstrating individual contributions to the body of Christ.

PRAYERS: O God, make me valuable for kingdom use, in Jesus’ mighty name.
