A MAN AFTER GOD’S OWN HEART

A MAN AFTER GOD’S OWN HEART

TEXT: But now thy kingdom shall not continue: the LORD hath sought him a man after his own heart, and the LORD hath commanded him to be captain over his people, because thou hast not kept that which the LORD commanded thee._ (1 Samuel 13:14)

The expression that forms the topic of our discussion today was used sparingly in the scriptures. As a matter of fact, David was fortunate enough to be one of the very few personalities (if not the only one) who was described in that manner, despite the multitude of men in the Bible who lived their lives pleasing God (Enoch, Abraham, Samuel, Daniel, Elijah, Job, etc.). It is indeed shocking that this unique son of Jesse found himself in favor with God Almighty, despite his numerous questionable deeds, ranging from dishonesty, murder, adultery, disobedience, nonchalance, brutality, and more. Everything could be attributed to David. Yet, he was described as a man after God’s own heart. This is indeed mysterious!

Two major incidents truly reflected and ultimately cemented David’s status as a man after God’s own heart. The first event occurred in the wilderness of Engedi (1 Samuel 24), while the second occurred in the wilderness of Ziph (1 Samuel 26). On both occasions, David had ample opportunity to eliminate Saul, thereby solidifying his hold on the throne. However, he chose to submit to the will of God. He emphasized that it was not within his power to touch the LORD’s anointed. Rather, he opined that God would Himself deal with Saul appropriately as and when due. David’s heart was so pure and right before God that God had to even make reference to it through Prophet Samuel when Saul was rejected by God and the issue of replacement came up. In the two instances stated above, he demonstrated a kind of meekness and forgiveness that can only be attributed to God Himself. How many people will actually let go of their sworn enemy when presented with the opportunity of doing them harm?

Key facts and lessons from David’s life

  1. Integrity is very important in life. David had his integrity to protect when presented with the opportunity of killing Saul and replacing him. Rather, he chose to wait for his time, and the kingdom willingly came to him when the right time came.
  2. As believers, there should be no unforgivable sin. We should endeavor to always demonstrate forgiveness in all circumstances, so that our heavenly Father will also forgive us.
  3. No matter your status with God, never allow it to get to your head to the extent that you become overly self-reliant. David fell on different occasions, but was fortunate enough that his reputation and standing with God weren’t really affected (though he actually paid the price for his seeds of various iniquities on various occasions).

SEARCHLIGHT: A right heart before God is of utmost importance when it comes to building a solid and sustainable relationship with Him.

PRAYER: O LORD, renew a right heart and spirit within me, in Jesus’ Mighty Name.
