BEYOND APPEARANCES: GOD’S STANDARD FOR LEADERSHIP

TEXT: 1 SAMUEL 16:6-7 (KJV)

“And it came to pass, when they were come, that he looked on Eliab, and said, Surely the LORD’s anointed is before him. But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.”

In our daily interactions, we often judge others based on outward appearances. We tend to evaluate people based on their physical attributes, social status, or material possessions. However, God’s standards differ significantly. When Samuel was searching for the next king of Israel, he initially thought Eliab was the LORD’s anointed due to his impressive physical stature. Eliab’s height and robust build made him appear like the ideal candidate for leadership. Nevertheless, God corrected Samuel, emphasizing that He looks beyond physical appearances and evaluates the heart.

In contrast, God’s standard for leadership emphasizes:

  • Heart: A Leader’s heart must be pure and right before God (1 Samuel 16:7). This means having a heart that seeks God, obeys His commands, and prioritizes HIS will.
  • Humility: True leaders recognize their limitations and dependence on God (1 Samuel 16:11-13). Humility allows leaders to listen, learn, and serve others.
  • Faithfulness: Leaders must demonstrate loyalty and commitment to God and His people (1 Samuel 16:11). Faithfulness involves standing firm in times of challenge and uncertainty.
  • Obedience: Leaders must obey GOD’s commands and principles (1 Samuel 6:1-5). Obedience demonstrates a leader’s willingness to submit to GOD’s authority.
  • Integrity: Leaders must possess moral integrity, being truthful, transparent, and just (Psalms 78:70-72). Integrity earns trust and respect from others.

Biblical Examples of Godly Leadership

  • DANIEL: Demonstrated faithfulness and integrity in the face of persecution.
  • DAVID: Exhibited humility and obedience, trusting God despite overwhelming challenges.
  • JOSEPH: Showed forgiveness and integrity, prioritizing GOD’s plan over personal interests.
  • SAMUEL: Displayed humility and obedience, listening to GOD’s voice.
  • MOSES: Demonstrated faithfulness and leadership, guiding Israel through the wilderness.
  • JOSHUA: Exhibited courage and obedience, trusting God’s promises.

The success of the aforementioned leaders wasn’t based on physical features but on their inner character. These leaders understood that true leadership is not about outward appearances but about aligning with God’s standards.

SEARCHLIGHT: As we navigate spiritual and administrative responsibilities, remember that GOD prioritizes spiritual stature and readiness over physical appearances and worldly accomplishments.

PRAYER: O LORD, mould me to be in line with YOUR will and desire, in JESUS’ mighty name.
