CALLED AND COMMISSIONED

TEXT: Jeremiah 1:1–19

KEY VERSE: “Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.” —Jeremiah 1:5

Before Jeremiah ever saw the light of day, God had already seen his destiny. The call upon his life did not begin when he felt ready; it began in the heart of God. This powerful truth reminds us that our lives are not accidents. We are known, formed, and appointed by God for His purpose.

When Jeremiah heard the Lord’s call, his immediate response was fear and inadequacy. “Ah, Lord God! behold, I cannot speak: for I am a child.” He focused on his limitations, but God focused on His assignment. The Lord did not argue with Jeremiah’s weakness; instead, He promised His presence. “Be not afraid… for I am with thee to deliver thee.” Divine calling is never based on human qualification — it is sustained by divine empowerment.

God then touched Jeremiah’s mouth, symbolizing that the words he would speak would not be his own but God’s. When God calls, He equips. When He assigns, He supplies. Jeremiah was appointed “to root out, and to pull down… to build, and to plant.” His ministry would involve both correction and restoration. God’s work often requires removing what is broken before establishing what is righteous.

The visions of the almond rod and the boiling pot further confirmed that God watches over His word to perform it. What He speaks, He fulfills. Though opposition would arise, the Lord assured Jeremiah that he would stand like a fortified city, an iron pillar, and brazen walls. The battles would be real, but so would God’s protection.

Jeremiah 1 teaches us that calling comes with responsibility, opposition, and divine backing. God does not promise ease, but He promises presence. He does not guarantee applause, but He guarantees purpose.

Today, remember that you are known by God, appointed for His plan, and strengthened by His Spirit. Do not allow fear, age, or limitation to silence your obedience. The One who called you is faithful to sustain you.

SEARCHLIGHT: Am I allowing fear and insecurity to limit the purpose God has placed upon my life?

PRAYER: Lord, thank You for knowing and calling me before I knew myself. Help me to trust Your presence, walk in obedience, and fulfill the purpose You have ordained for my life. Amen.
