TEXT: Job 32:13–23

KEY VERSE: “I said, I will also give my opinion; I will tell what I think.” Job 32:17

In the middle of a heated argument, it’s often tempting to jump in quickly—especially when you feel you have something important to say. But true wisdom teaches us to wait, listen, and only speak when our words are helpful and well thought out.

In today’s text, we meet Elihu, a young man who had quietly listened as Job and his three friends—Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite—argued back and forth. Though younger than the others, Elihu believed God had given him wisdom beyond his years. So when he finally decided to speak, it wasn’t out of pride or impatience—it was because he felt deeply led to share a different point of view.

After closely observing the conversation, Elihu noticed that Job’s replies didn’t offer clear answers, and his friends failed to guide Job with wisdom. So Elihu stepped in—not to boast, but to bring clarity where confusion reigned. His careful choice to speak after listening showed how powerful self-restraint can be.

Those who are slow to speak and quick to listen are often the ones who carry the most weight in a conversation. They observe first, then speak with calm confidence. In Job 32:17, Elihu shows us this kind of quiet strength. Though young, he offered his insights respectfully, with a fresh and honest voice. His words didn’t come from pride but from careful thought and deep respect for God.

Self-control—especially when we feel angry or provoked—is a discipline every Christian must learn. God’s Word tells us to be “quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry.” That’s not always easy, but it’s how we grow in character and reflect Christ. When we let emotions or careless words take over, we damage our own witness and lose the strength that comes from walking closely with God.

SEARCHLIGHT: Being calm and thoughtful before speaking is a sign of true wisdom. It shows that we are guided by the Spirit and living as faithful followers of Christ.

PRAYER: Lord, teach me when to speak and when to be silent. Help me show wisdom and grace in every word and action. Amen.
