DEATH AS THE WAGES OF SIN
AUGUST 22, 2025
TEXT: “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” (Romans 6:23)
Sin has no positive benefit in the life of a person. When we abide in sin, we cheat ourselves of the benefits of eternity which God has planned for us. God does not deal kindly with sin.
Just like in our normal world, there are rewards for everything done, either positive or negative. In the same vein, in the kingdom there are rewards for sinful lifestyles, and these rewards are usually destructive in nature.
Most sinful lifestyles are heavily saturated with pleasure and enjoyment. One may feel on top of the world. For instance, a fornicator believes he is having fun, and so also do smokers, drunkards, thieves, etc. However, paying for these sins is never as pleasant.
Every sin has its repercussion, regardless of the nature of such sin. There are no small or gigantic sins. In the scheme of God, a robber is the same as one who simply stares at a lady with lustful intentions.
FORMS OF DEATH THAT MAY BE OCCASIONED BY SIN
- Physical death: Some sins can lead to the bodily death of a person. Some people died physically in the Bible as a result of punishment for their sins, e.g., Er, Onan, Aaron, Ahab, Jezebel, Athaliah, Nabal, Absalom, etc.
- Spiritual death: When a person becomes totally insensitive to the things of the Spirit because of sin, such a person is dead spiritually. Such sins can separate you from God, making it seem as if He is unresponsive to your calls. (Isaiah 59:8)
- Everlasting death: This is the worst experience that can befall a person. This death will take place on Judgment Day and will be finalized in the lake of fire. (Revelation 20:14–15)
ADDITIONAL FACTS ABOUT SIN
- Sin often appears to be a nourishing task. It looks harmless and safe—until you are neck-deep in it.
- The devil has no good package for you. All he does is lure you into his fold, and after sucking you dry, he disposes of you like a squeezed orange. (Proverbs 14:12)
SEARCHLIGHT: Repent now while you can! God does not desire that anyone should perish. He is calling on you with open arms.
PRAYERS: O LORD, help me not to derive pleasure in sinful lifestyles, in Jesus’ mighty name.
