TEXT: 2 Corinthians 5:14-15

KEY VERSE: And that he died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them, and rose again.

It has been emphasized times without number in the course of our previous teachings that evangelism is not a burden for us as believers. We are not doing God any favour by following the laid-down scriptural injunction for us to evangelize and spread the gospel. Many believers engage in evangelism, not because of passion or zeal, but because of obligatory feelings. They believe they owe it as a duty to God, whether it pleases them or not, and out of fear, they are compelled to embark on it. However, in this great commission given unto us by God, willingness, passion, and genuine concern for perishing souls are fundamental requirements. We don’t preach to others in order to be loved by God. We do it because we are His sons and are beneficiaries of His love already, and by virtue of this, we are expected to do His will and spread the good news to others as a matter of nature, rather than compulsion.

Evangelism is expected to become our identity as believers in the sense that we are saved by grace and should therefore extend the hand of fellowship to perishing souls around us. As believers, we should live for Christ. His will must become our will; His passion must become our passion. He has come to save lost souls, and that should also be our mandate (Luke 19:10).
