GOOD WORKS

GOOD WORKS

TEXT: This is a faithful saying, and these things I will that thou affirm constantly, that they which have believed in God might be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable unto men. (Titus 3:8)

Today, we shall be examining the importance of good works in the life of a believer, using the life of Titus as a focal point. Titus was one of those who were mentored by the Apostle Paul during his frequent evangelical tours and trips. He grew from being an ordinary believer to the status of a disciple, a son, and eventually a faithful and trustworthy servant who was deemed worthy enough to have an entire province under his control. All the churches in the various cities located in Crete were under his pastoral control. In essence, you can call him a “Provincial Overseer.”

It is one thing to be a believer or claim to be one; it is another thing entirely to manifest good works to back up our Christian status. Engaging in good works is a huge proof that our faith is not just verbal in nature but one backed up with actions. It also shows that we value our relationship with God, because God, being our Father, is a lover of good works, and we are not expected to be any different from Him.

Apostle James emphasized in the book of James 2 that faith without active work or manifestation backing it up is grossly dead and incapacitated. Oral or verbal declaration of faith without conscious effort to prove it is simply a waste of time. Apostle Paul also emphasized this in Galatians 6:2, where he encouraged the Galatians, and by extension us, to bear one another’s burdens. We should show care, compassion, and empathy towards others’ plights, as and when due.

EXAMPLES OF GOOD WORKS THAT A BELIEVER CAN SHOW

  1. Helping a neighbor who might be in need of one thing or another, e.g., food, clothing, etc.
  2. Speaking out on various shortcomings in society rather than trying to align yourself with them just to get societal status or worldly validation.
  3. Visiting the ill and vulnerable ones around you and helping them in any capacity you can.
  4. Trying as much as practicable to donate, no matter how small, to philanthropic and charitable causes in the house of God and other places.

SEARCHLIGHT: Good works can best be said to be an essential aspect of a believer’s life. It helps us grow more in our faith and illustrate the agape love of Christ to those around us.

PRAYER: O Lord, help me to reflect You in my day-to-day affairs, in the name of Jesus.

BIBLE READING: Genesis 31-33, Acts 1
