INDOLENCE IS COSTLY
JANUARY 26, 2026
TEXT: “He who is slothful in his work is a brother to him who is a great waster.” — Proverbs 18:9 (NKJV)
Indolence simply means laziness—a refusal to act or put in effort. It is choosing comfort over responsibility. Laziness may look harmless at first, but over time it becomes dangerous. It quietly steals opportunities, delays progress, and destroys potential.
The Bible describes the slothful person as someone who loves sleep and avoids work (Proverbs 6:9). Such a person makes excuses instead of taking action. The sluggard says, “There is a lion outside!” (Proverbs 22:13), not because danger is real, but because excuses are easier than effort. In doing this, he wastes time, gifts, and opportunities given by God.
An indolent lifestyle expects reward without labor and harvest without sowing (Proverbs 13:4). But life does not work that way. Progress demands effort. Success requires discipline. Dreams are not fulfilled by wishing alone.
God created us to work. Work is not a curse; it is part of our dignity. Our God is a working God, and He expects His children to be productive. Jesus Himself said, “I must work the works of Him who sent Me” (John 9:4). He warned against laziness in the parable of the talents, where the servant who did nothing was called “wicked and slothful” (Matthew 25:26).
Faith does not mean doing nothing. Trusting God while refusing to act is not faith—it is laziness. God blesses diligence, not idleness.
In conclusion, there is great potential inside every one of us, but it must be developed. God hides His best rewards where only diligence can reach them. Your future will respond to your effort. What you refuse to work for, you will never fully enjoy.
SEARCHLIGHT: The devil finds work for idle hands, but God rewards diligent hands.
PRAYER: Father, deliver me from laziness and give me a diligent spirit.
