TEXT: Joshua 7

KEY VERSE: Therefore the children of Israel could not stand before their enemies, but turned their backs before their enemies, because they were accursed: neither will I be with you any more, except ye destroy the accursed from among you. Joshua 7:12

Today, we shall bring this topic to an end by examining some Bible characters who lost divine touch, connection, and backing with God Almighty.

1. Adam and Eve: Two individuals who were specifically placed in the Garden of Eden to nurture and tend it started well with God. However, the moment disobedience came into their lives, all the communion and togetherness they had enjoyed with God prior to that time were completely lost, and they never regained it. (Genesis 2 and 3)

2. King Saul: Saul was God’s favourite at the beginning of his reign. In fact, he had been specifically anointed by God through Prophet Samuel as the first king of the United Kingdom of Israel. Unfortunately, disobedience and arrogance set in when God directed him to go and smite all the Amalekites and spare no one or animal; yet Saul was recalcitrant. After this episode, Saul lost touch with the throne of grace, and his life became so starved of spiritual guidance that he had to seek refuge at Endor in the house of a witch. (1 Samuel 15, 28)

3. King Solomon: Solomon was so loved and cherished by God that God himself suggested a name for him (Jedidiah). Solomon started by doing the will of God in his capacity as king. Unfortunately, he made terrible marital choices by marrying multiple foreign women who ended up turning his heart away from the God of Israel towards numerous foreign idols. (1 Kings 11)

4. Samson: Samson was so overwhelmed by the power in his life that he acted beyond control and sometimes looked like an insane person. Such was the enormity of his power. He, however, refused to take heed spiritually, culminating in him losing divine backing, and his enemies caught him easily like a domestic animal. (Judges 16)

5. Demas: Demas once occupied the same enviable position occupied by the likes of Luke, Titus, Timothy, Silas, Aristarchus, etc., in the ministry of Apostle Paul. However, due to worldliness and materialism, he lost his heritage and ultimately God’s divine backing. (2 Timothy 4:10, Colossians 4:14)

6. The Israelites on several occasions: In the Old Testament, there were many occasions on which the Israelites lost out on God’s divine agenda. They lost divine backing and were severally sold out to the Canaanites, Mesopotamians, Ammonites, Moabites, Midianites, Philistines, etc. They were shut out from heaven on each of these occasions.

SEARCHLIGHT:
The greatest tragedy in life is not poverty or lack; it is when one’s life lacks divine direction and guidelines.

PRAYER:
O Lord, help me to dwell under your wings at all times, in the mighty name of Jesus.
