MAINTAINING UNITY IN DIVERSITY IN THE BODY OF CHRIST
NOVEMBER 28, 2024
TEXT: Acts 15:10
“Now therefore why tempt ye God, to put a yoke upon the neck of the disciples, which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear?”
In the body of Christ, conflicts and misunderstandings are inevitable, as no one is a superhuman. One way or another, conflicts are bound to arise. However, how we respond to these events distinguishes us from how the people of the world would respond to similar situations.
A thorough reading of our given text reveals a conflict that took place in the early church, where some people raised the opinion that Gentile converts should be circumcised to follow the Jewish law. However, the Council, comprising Peter, Paul, James the Less, John the Beloved, Silas, Barnabas, Barsabas, and others, resolved to find a solution that would satisfy all parties involved. The apostles reached a consensus that there was no need to burden the new Gentile converts with stringent and difficult rules. Instead, they urged them to abstain from foods polluted by idols, sexual immorality, strangled animals, and meats with blood still in them.
From the above, it is clear that the apostles realized that a lot was at stake if they failed to apply wisdom in resolving the issues. For instance, it could discourage the new believers, who might find the rule of circumcision unbearable, thereby turning them away from the pathway of salvation.
KEY POINTS/LESSONS FROM THIS DISCOURSE
- In every conflict within the house of God, there should be openness and communication to ensure that a better solution is found. Gossiping, backbiting, and backstabbing should be discouraged by all possible means.
- Every debate and disagreement should be respectful and should not be seen as a means to address a personal vendetta against another individual.
- We must prioritize unity and the general good of all.
SEARCHLIGHT: In resolving conflicts, prioritize peace without compromising biblical principles. Trust in the Holy Spirit for guidance.
PRAYERS: O Lord, give me divine wisdom to navigate any conflicting situation, in the name of Jesus.
