TEXT: MATTHEW 8:23-27

KEY VERSE: And he saith unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then he arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm. Matthew 8:26

Today’s topic borders on various instances when we, as believers, actually face some stormy situations that seem to be well beyond our control. Jesus and His disciples were on a boat crossing the sea when a tempest arose. The tempest was so fierce that the disciples thought they would perish. Meanwhile, in the midst of this terrible storm, the Saviour of the world was sleeping at the back of the boat, seemingly oblivious or deliberately feigning ignorance of what was going on. The disciples were forced to call out loudly to Him, asking why He seemed so unperturbed that they were perishing. Immediately, the Lord arose, and He promptly rebuked the wind. After this, the Bible recorded that “and there was a great calm”.

In the world we find ourselves today, we are bound to face tempests and storms. God has not promised us a life of bliss or comfort all through without having some cloudy days. Many erroneously believe that once they become Christians, prosperity is already certain and there’s no way they will have a tough or cumbersome life. This is, however, a mere fallacy, as battles will surely come. How we tackle or react to the battles will then determine whether we will be overcome or we will overcome. (John 16:33)

KEY FACTS

  1. The silence of Christ in our situation does not necessarily mean absence. Sometimes, God deliberately allows us to pass through certain issues in order to aid our spiritual growth and development. The case of Job is a very good example. The devil thought he was harming Job, not knowing he was indirectly building up his spiritual formidability. (Job 1-2, Isaiah 41:10)
  2. Fear can cripple faith, but faith has the ability to strengthen our fear. When you find yourself in the midst of a storm, do not fear or panic. Rather, let your faith be overwhelming that God is for you and none can be against you.
  3. Once Jesus Christ is in the boat of your life, the ultimate result is peace and calmness in all ramifications.(Philippians 4:7)
  4. God’s word supersedes any storm in your life. Once God speaks against your storm, expect solutions.
