POWER TO OVERCOME ANXIETY

POWER TO OVERCOME ANXIETY

OCTOBER 6, 2024

TEXT: Philippians 4:6-7

“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

In our daily lives, anxiety can arise from various sources, leaving us feeling overwhelmed, frustrated, and uncertain about the future. However, the LORD offers assurance that He is always with us, providing guidance, strength, and comfort. As Psalms 23:4 reminds us, “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff comfort me.”

PREVALENT CAUSES OF ANXIETY IN HUMANS

  1. Fear of the Unknown: Uncertainty about the future triggers anxiety, causing us to worry about what tomorrow holds. This fear can lead to excessive planning, striving for control, and a sense of hopelessness.
  2. Fear of Failure: Fear of not meeting expectations drives anxiety, often leading to excessive self-criticism, perfectionism, and a fear of taking risks.
  3. Fear of Rejection: Desire for public validation leads to anxiety, causing us to focus on external approval rather than inner value, self-worth, and identity in Christ.

HOW DO WE OVERCOME UNNECESSARY ANXIETY IN OUR DAY-TO-DAY LIVES?

  1. Trust in God Almighty: Believe in His power to equip you with what you need for daily living (Philippians 4:19, Romans 8:28). Remember, Jesus Christ assured us that God, who cares for the birds and lilies, is abundantly able to care for us.
  2. Incessant Prayer: Make your requests known to God with thanksgiving (Philippians 4:6). Apostle Paul admonished us to pray without ceasing, casting our cares upon God.
  3. Cultivate a Relationship with God: Friendship with God enables you to claim His promises. You can’t “collect” from God without being “connected” to Him. Spend quality time with God, studying His Word and listening to His voice.
  4. Acknowledge Limitations: Rely on God, the ultimate supplier of needs (Philippians 4:19). Recognize your limitations, lean on God’s strength, and trust in His sovereignty.

SEARCHLIGHT: Anxiety is a subtle sign of faithlessness in God and His ability to meet our needs. When we worry excessively, it shows trust in our own might. While it is natural to worry over the uncertain, it must not override our confidence and trust in God Almighty.

PRAYER: LORD JESUS, Help me to trust in you more, in Jesus’ name.
