PRIDE: THE ANCIENT ROOT OF EVERY FALL

TEXT: Ezekiel 28:1–19
KEY VERSE: “Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.” — Proverbs 16:18
Before the first human sinned, something went wrong in heaven — one of God’s most powerful angels allowed pride to grow in his heart. That angel was Lucifer, and his fall is the root of every fall that has followed since.
In the book of Ezekiel, we read about the prince of Tyre, a human king who became proud because of his wealth, wisdom, and position. He believed he was more than just a man — he saw himself as a god. But God sent a clear message through the prophet: “You are only a man, not God.” His pride made him blind, and his fall became certain.
But behind this earthly prince stood another figure — the king of Tyre — a spiritual being described in words too great for any man. He had been in Eden, full of beauty and wisdom. He was the anointed cherub, created by God and placed in a high position in heaven. Yet, the Bible says, “You were perfect… until iniquity was found in you.” That iniquity was pride. He began to admire his beauty more than his Creator. He used his gifts to draw attention to himself. As a result, God cast him down.
This king of Tyre represents Satan. His fall reminds us of an eternal truth: pride turns even the most gifted being into an enemy of God. Whether it’s through wealth, power, success, or talent — when we start to believe we are something apart from God, pride enters. And where pride enters, a fall is not far behind.
God values humility. The moment we begin to think too highly of ourselves, we place ourselves in great danger. The same pride that ruined Satan and the prince of Tyre can also ruin anyone today who forgets that all they have comes from God.
In conclusion, God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble. The downfall of the prince of Tyre and the fall of Satan remind us that the heart must be guarded daily. It is not what we have that defines us — it is how we respond to the One who gave it. Pride can corrupt the greatest gifts. Humility, however, preserves and multiplies grace. May the prince of this world find nothing in us.
SEARCH LIGHT: Pride was the first sin and remains the deadliest. The higher it lifts a person, the harder the fall. Guard your heart with humility — it is your greatest protection against the enemy’s oldest weapon.
PRAYER: Father, thank You for all You’ve given me. Help me to stay humble and never allow pride to take root in my heart. Teach me to use every gift to serve You, not to glorify myself in Jesus’ name, Amen.
