RAISING GODLY CHILDREN: THE POWER OF PARENTAL EXAMPLE
MARCH 14, 2025
TEXT: “Lo, children are an heritage of the Lord: and the fruit of the womb is his reward.” Psalm 127:3
The quality of a leader is reflected in the behaviour of their followers. If a leader inspires loyalty, integrity, and courage in their followers, it is evidence of their own character. Similarly, if a leader’s followers are selfish, deceitful, or cowardly, it reflects poorly on the leader’s character. This idea can be summed up as the law of imitation. The law states that a leader’s actions, behaviours, and attitudes are imitated by their followers.
This concept also applies to family dynamics. Your children are a reflection of your character. If they can inherit your biological and physiological traits, they can also mirror your character traits, which you exemplify before them. Therefore, modelling positive behaviour is essential.
Children, the heritage given to us by the Lord, are highly sensitive to their surroundings. They absorb and reflect what they see around them. Consequently, we must set a good example for our children to follow, so they are not led astray. We can achieve this in several ways:
- Model a Strong Relationship with God: Our devotion to God should be worthy of emulation. Our personal Bible study, quiet time, and prayer life are essential for our children to witness and adopt.
- Code of Conduct in Your Marriage: Your interpersonal relationship with your spouse should exemplify a Christian marriage for your children. Your submission, honour, mutual respect, appreciation, and communication should be a tapestry of love that your children can weave into their own lives.
- Conflict Resolution: When handling misunderstandings with your spouse, remember that your children are watching and learning from you. Resolve conflicts privately, calmly, and with mutual respect to set a good example for your children.
- Assisting in Household Chores: As a father, your male child can emulate you by helping with household chores, such as washing dishes, sweeping the floor, or doing laundry. This teaches children the importance of shared responsibility and teamwork.
- Be the Kneeling Parent: Husband, join your wife in prayer for your children. Provide them with a strong spiritual foundation by enrolling them in the “Best Legacy School” – the school of the Word of God.
In conclusion, make yourself available to your children, both physically and emotionally. Show interest in their lives, and be their confidant. Remember that you are responsible for their spiritual and emotional development, and you will be accountable for their well-being one day. With God’s help, you will be a balanced parent.
SEARCHLIGHT: Your children are a prototype of your marriage.
PRAYER: Father, help me partner with you in parenting.
BIBLE READING: Joshua 3-5, Acts 28
