SEEKING GOD BEFORE STEPPING FORWARD
MARCH 28, 2026
TEXT: 2 Samuel 2
KEY VERSE: “And it came to pass after this, that David enquired of the LORD, saying, Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah? And the LORD said unto him, Go up. And David said, Whither shall I go up? And he said, Unto Hebron.— 2 Samuel 2:1
There are seasons when the next step seems obvious, yet wisdom demands that a man pauses to ask God. David had every reason to move quickly after Saul’s death, but he chose inquiry over assumption. He did not allow opportunity to replace dependence on God. This shows that even when something looks right, it is still necessary to seek God’s direction. A step taken without God’s leading can lead to unnecessary conflict.
When David received direction, he moved according to what God said, not according to personal ambition. He went to Hebron and was made king, but only over Judah. The process was gradual. This reveals that God’s promises may unfold in stages. A man must learn to be faithful with the portion he has received without forcing what is yet to come. Rushing ahead of God often creates complications.
At the same time, another leadership arose in opposition. This led to tension and conflict between two sides. What could have been avoided became prolonged because not everyone was aligned with God’s order. This teaches that not every battle is necessary, and not every struggle is a sign of progress. Some conflicts arise when men act outside of God’s timing or purpose.
David’s conduct, however, remained instructive. Even in a time of tension, he maintained honor. He acknowledged those who had shown kindness to Saul and responded with wisdom rather than bitterness. This shows that a heart aligned with God does not become reckless in moments of transition. Position does not change character; it reveals it.
For believers, this chapter is a call to slow down and seek God before moving forward. Not every open door should be entered without inquiry. Direction matters more than speed. When a man learns to depend on God for each step, he avoids unnecessary battles and walks in alignment with divine purpose.
SEARCHLIGHT: Speed without direction leads to struggle, but guidance from God leads to peace.
PRAYER: Lord, teach me to seek You before making decisions, even when the way seems clear. Help me to move according to Your direction and not my own understanding. Keep my heart steady, humble, and aligned with Your will at all times. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
