SPIRITUAL HUNGER
DECEMBER 19, 2024
TEXT: And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst. (John 6:35)
Today’s discussion originated from when Jesus Christ fed the 5,000 people with five loaves of bread and two small fishes in a supernaturally miraculous manner. The people, having eaten to their satisfaction, started looking for Jesus after some time. When they finally saw Him, He made them understand that He knew their motive for searching for Him. He said, “Ye seek me not because ye saw the miracles, but because ye did eat of the loaves and were filled” (John 6:26). From this verse, it was clear that the people thought of Jesus as an automatic meal ticket to cater for their future hunger problems. They never knew that there was a special hunger and craving which the Son of Man had come to fulfill. Spiritual hunger is therefore that special and deep longing which a believer is expected to have, culminating in a desire to know God more for who He is, rather than for what we can receive from Him in the form of material benefits. It is the longing and craving for fellowship and communion with the Father. Spiritual hunger is very essential to the Christian journey of a serious believer. It involves a desire for spiritual nourishment, which we actually need to sustain our spiritual growth and development. It involves readiness to constantly seek God and establish deeper levels of relationship with Him. (Psalm 63:1-2).
CULTIVATING SPIRITUAL HUNGER
- No matter how busy you may be, always set aside time to seek God and pursue a deeper relationship with Him.
- Let God’s word be your stable companion and partner, as it contains all the “capsules” needed to aid our spiritual growth. (Joshua 1:8)
- Ask God to equip you with constant hunger and thirst for Him. (Psalm 42:1)
SEARCHLIGHT
To truly love God, one must have a genuine desire for Him, just as in any relationship where feelings are essential for its survival.
PRAYER
O Lord, equip me with hunger for You, in the name of Jesus Christ.
