SPIRITUAL THIRST
January 15, 2025
TEXT: “In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.” John 7:37-38 (KJV)
Beloved, we all experience a deep sense of spiritual thirst at some point in our lives. This feeling cannot be quenched by worldly pursuits or temporary pleasures. Jesus invites us to come to Him and drink, promising that those who believe in Him will have rivers of living water flowing out of their hearts.
In Matthew 5:6, Jesus teaches us that blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be filled. This spiritual thirst is a longing for a deeper connection with God, a yearning for His presence and guidance in our lives.
Let’s illustrate this concept with the story of the Samaritan woman at the well (John 4:1-42). She had been searching for fulfilment in her life, but her attempts at quenching her spiritual thirst had left her empty and unfulfilled. When she encountered Jesus, He offered her living water, which would become a spring of water welling up to eternal life. She was no longer thirsty, for she had found the source of true satisfaction.
As we reflect on our own spiritual journey, we must acknowledge our spiritual thirst and seek to quench it with living water from Jesus. We must avoid seeking temporary pleasures or worldly pursuits to satisfy our thirst. Instead, we must come to Jesus, the source of living water, to satisfy our deepest longings.
As we seek to cultivate a deeper spiritual thirst, we must remember that it’s a lifelong journey. We will face challenges and setbacks, but with perseverance and faith, we can continue to grow in our relationship with God.
