THE DANGER OF PROFANITY

THE DANGER OF PROFANITY

TEXT: But refuse profane and old wives’ fables (1 Timothy 4:7)

Today’s teaching borders on the need for believers to guard themselves against profane teachings. The word “Profane” means to be secular, unholy, impure, unconsecrated, etc. Apostle Paul, in his epistle to his very good “boy”, Timothy, warned the latter about the need to filter certain profane things aside and avoid teachings and doctrines that will not aid his spiritual growth and development. When something is profane in nature, it simply implies that it will render you spiritually useless. It won’t draw you closer to God. It won’t benefit you in any manner whatsoever. To be very plain, it is not every time that profane things come in form of sins. Sometimes, they are just little, seemingly harmless engagements that add no value to our spiritual life and growth.

Examples of Profanity

  1. Arguing endlessly on social media or offline about church or religious doctrines. E.g arguing about which pastor has a better dress sense, speaks the best English, drives the best car, has the most beautiful wife, preaches the most exciting message, and so on. While these may not be direct sins, they are profanities which add no single value to our lives, but may even become pathways to sins and destruction.
  2. Teachings that appear to be deep and powerful, heavily laced with epigrams, anecdotes, and rhemas but are actually not scriptural in nature. This is the order of the day in some churches today. Many churches no longer preach the true and undiluted word of God, but simply compile their thoughts together and baptize them with enough grammar to make it sound captivating.
  3. Discussions and conversations that are of little or no value to our lives. All these and many more are some of the profanities which God wants us to genuinely do away with. These things must be rejected by us as they constitute a lot of havoc in our lives such as:
  4. They damage our spiritual eyes and ears, thereby making it difficult for us to discern.
  5. They becloud our sense of reasoning and make us spiritually unstable.
  6. They do not build faith in any way. They only connect with the carnal flesh to rob us more.

Alternatives/Solutions to Profanity

  1. Study the word of God to get direct answers to questions bothering your mind instead of resorting to religious myths and hearsays.
  2. Avoid unnecessary arguments that do not edify your spirit man.
  3. Avoid hyper-grace messages that keep you hyped-up physically instead of introducing sobriety and solemnity to your spirit man.
  4. Before going deeply into any conversation, ask yourself if you have any value to derive from it.
  5. Choose your friends with spiritual discretion. Not all friends are friends. Run away from certain friends that can drain you.

SEARCHLIGHT: Some struggle not because they are not spiritual enough, but because they expend energy on wrong things. Call yourself and your spirit man to order today.

PRAYER: O LORD, deliver me from irrelevant and frivolous affairs, in Jesus mighty name.
