THE GREATEST NEED OF MAN
JANUARY 27, 2026
TEXT: “Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.”— Hebrews 4:16
Many people think that money is the greatest need in life. But this belief limits a person. Money can only take you as far as what you can afford. When you live by what you can buy, your life is restricted to your resources.
However, God is calling us to something far greater—something you do not have to pay for. It is priceless, yet never valueless. It connects us to the unlimited resources of heaven. That greatest need is the mercy of God.
When a man receives God’s mercy, he begins to operate beyond his natural ability. God’s mercy is far above human mercy. Those who walk in it do not struggle endlessly; help comes in ways they cannot explain. God is saying, “Come and draw from My ocean of mercy.”
The Bible tells us of a young shepherd boy who had a covenant of sure mercies (Isaiah 55:3). David was insignificant in the eyes of men—no status, no training for kingship, even forgotten by his own family. Yet God said of him:
“I took thee from the sheepfold… to be ruler over my people Israel.”
— 2 Samuel 7:8
Mercy lifted David from obscurity to the throne. Throughout his life, he depended on God’s mercy and acknowledged it continually. He understood that strength, talent, and effort could never replace mercy.
Beloved, no one can fulfill God’s calling by strength, zeal, or intelligence alone. You may be energetic, knowledgeable, and spiritually gifted, yet achieve little without mercy. In God’s kingdom, achievement is not by merit—but by mercy.
This is why we sometimes see people who seem less qualified advance, while others who are more gifted struggle. Scripture says:
“I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy.”
— Romans 9:15
So when things don’t go as expected, remember:
“It is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that showeth mercy.”
— Romans 9:16
God’s mercy is for those who recognize their need for Him—those who know they are not sufficient on their own. It is not for the self-sufficient, but for the dependent.
It is time to enroll in God’s school of mercy—and never graduate.
It is time to remain in the care of God’s mercy—and never be discharged.
Beloved, you do not need to live at the mercy of men.
Come boldly to the throne of grace, where you will obtain mercy and find grace for every time of need.
SEARCHLIGHT: Man’s greatest need is God’s mercy.
PRAYER: Father, if there is anything I need, it is Your mercy. Lord, have mercy on me.
