THE IMPORTANCE OF SPIRITUAL SELF-ASSESSMENT
NOVEMBER 15, 2024
TEXT: “Examine yourselves, whether you are in the faith; prove your own selves. Do you not know that Jesus Christ is in you, unless you are reprobates?” (2 Corinthians 13:5)
The above text was directed at the people of Corinth. Apostle Paul, in trying to ensure spiritual consistency on their part, advised them on the importance of regular self-examination.
Spiritual self-assessment is the act of reflecting on your spiritual journey and sojourn with God over a given period. It serves as a means of knowing your successes and failures within that period.
Apostle Paul, in our text for today, emphasized to the Corinthians the importance of deep reflection and examination regarding our Christianity. Do not take it for granted that all is well when it really is not. Constant self-assessment is fundamental for the following reasons:
REASONS FOR SPIRITUAL SELF-ASSESSMENT
- It helps us identify areas where we need more growth and development.
- It helps recognize and avoid potential spiritual complacency and overconfidence.
- It endows us with the spirit of humility and absolute dependence on God.
- It enhances spiritual maturity, as the more you examine yourself, the more you discover mature ways to respond to spiritual issues.
GUIDELINES TO PROPER SPIRITUAL SELF-ASSESSMENT
- Subject yourself to trusted mentors and seek honest feedback.
- Assess your level of spiritual discipline in areas such as prayer, fasting, vigils, evangelism, and giving.
- Evaluate your relationships and priorities. Is it your mobile phone, gaming pads, or the opposite sex? This will help you make a logical and balanced resolution.
- Schedule a specific time for personal reflection, assessment, and prayer.
EFFECTS OF NOT OBSERVING SELF-ASSESSMENT
- It can separate a person from God’s presence. The Bible encourages those who stand to take heed lest they fall.
- One remains spiritually stagnant with little or no growth.
SEARCHLIGHT: Never be spiritually lackadaisical, failing to recognize when you are on a downward spiral. Examine yourself today, detect the defective area, and pray to God for strength.
PRAYER: O Lord, help me not to drift from Your presence, in Jesus’ mighty name.
