THE MISSION OF JESUS: SEEKING THE LOST
NOVEMBER 8, 2024
TEXT
for the son of man has come to seek and to save that which was lost (Luke 19:10)
The event that led to this story was the salvation experience of the tax collector, Zacchaeus. Jesus Christ was passing through that particular route when He found Zacchaeus, who had climbed a sycamore tree to catch a glimpse of Him. Jesus told him to come down, and that was how salvation came upon his life that day.
The above experience shows that Jesus Christ was specifically sent to seek the lost sheep in the world. At the commencement of His earthly ministry, the Jews and Pharisees had their own template for how Jesus should conduct Himself and carry out His ministry. According to them, it was taboo for Him to mingle with the so-called outcasts and notorious sinners. On several occasions, the Pharisees criticized Him for eating with publicans and sinners. They expected Him to associate only with those they classified as saints, but they were totally oblivious to the true nature of Jesus’ ministry.
There is usually more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over multiple saints already in heaven (Luke 15:11-32, Romans 5:8). Jesus Christ is primarily concerned about the souls that are perishing and doomed. He has no reservations about mingling with them to save their souls.
In our daily lives, we are expected to emulate Jesus Christ’s compassion and passion for perishing souls around us. We should not hesitate to mingle with the so-called outcasts among us, not to imitate their sinful lifestyles, but to convince them to change their ways (Matthew 9:36-38).
SEARCHLIGHT
Never join the group of people who believe salvation is meant only for them. Salvation is a gift for all. Having received salvation, it is essential that we transfer this gift to perishing souls.
PRAYERS
Lord, give me the spirit of passion for perishing souls, in Jesus’ mighty name.
