THE ROLE OF MENTORSHIP IN SPIRITUAL GROWTH

TEXT: He took up also the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and went back, and stood by the bank of Jordan (2 Kings 2:13)
Mentorship refers to a situation in which a person who has previously navigated a particular path provides guidance for another person who seeks or desires to follow the same path. Mentorship is essential in life. Without seeking guidance from individuals who have earlier attempted something similar, it may be challenging to attain certain heights. Even if a person eventually succeeds in such an endeavor, progress tends to be extremely slow. Therefore, we cannot underestimate the importance of mentors.
In the case of Prophet Elisha, his relationship with Prophet Elijah played a crucial role in shaping his life and ministry.
WHAT ARE THE EXPECTED FEATURES OF EFFECTIVE MENTORSHIP?
- Effective mentorship involves the intentional investment of one’s time, energy, and resources in the life of a mentee to enhance their development.
- It involves providing guidance and direction to a mentee, teaching them the necessary steps involved in achieving a particular task.
- Effective mentorship also involves the eventual release and encouragement of a mentee after they have successfully learned the ropes. After Elijah had taught Elisha certain things, he encouraged him and released him unto the grace of God.
- Furthermore, effective mentorship requires commitment to one’s mentor and not jumping ahead of one’s superior. Elisha was particularly gifted, but he chose to continue learning from his mentor and ended up shaking Israel and performing more miracles than his master ever did. Many mentees today are usually eager to outshine their mentors. After a few months of mentorship, they begin to spot “errors” in the lives of their mentors, trying everything possible to correct the supposed errors.

SEARCHLIGHT: Mentors are needed to expedite one’s journey in life. Mentorship provides the necessary guidance one needs to consult in the course of that journey.
PRAYER: O Lord, help me with the right mentorship to expedite the journey of my life, in Jesus’ name.
