THE ROLE OF MENTORSHIP IN SPIRITUAL GROWTH II

TEXT: He took up also the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and went back, and stood by the bank of Jordan; (2 Kings 2:13)

Today, we shall continue from where we stopped yesterday by examining certain steps that must be put in place before picking mentors.

FACTORS TO CONSIDER BEFORE PICKING MENTORS

  1. Choose prayerfully. Do not choose a mentor merely because the person is a massive crowd puller or because most people are rushing after that particular mentor. Rather, let God guide you. God certainly knows what is best for our destiny and will surely direct our paths to the right individual, as long as we acknowledge Him before taking the step. Proverbs 3:5-6
  2. Identify your specific and peculiar areas of need. Reflect carefully on what you actually need. Do not go for a mentor just for the sake of having one. When you have your goals clearly laid out, you will be able to choose a suitable mentor. For instance, if you are interested in singing and music, it would be wrong to go and pick a prophet just because everyone is submitting to him. You are better off going for a gospel musician filled with the Holy Spirit and who is not a mere gospel entertainer or fun supplier. (Proverbs 29:3)
  3. Look for mentors with proper character and integrity who will have a positive influence in your life. The way your mentor behaves will probably rub off on you. If you pick a man who is seemingly a prophet or evangelist, but a chronic womanizer and wife beater, do not be surprised when you start seeing nothing wrong in these acts.
  4. Choose a mentor who is not just into your area of desire as a novice or amateur, but a person who is a seasoned expert in that field. (Proverbs 22:29)
  5. Evaluate and ascertain their availability. Do not choose a person who is too busy even for himself. You need someone you can easily access. Choose someone you can easily share your burdens with and who is always within reach most times. (2 Timothy 2:2)

SEARCHLIGHT: Choosing a mentor is a crucial decision that requires careful consideration.
