THE ROLE OF MENTORSHIP IN SPIRITUAL GROWTH III

TEXT: He took up also the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and went back, and stood by the bank of Jordan; (2 Kings 2:13)
Today, we shall conclude the series we started two days ago on the relevance of mentorship by examining the lives of biblical examples of mentor-mentee relationships.
Biblical Examples
- Moses and Joshua: Moses mentored Joshua and ensured that he was adequately prepared to succeed as the future leader of Israel. Moses possessed almost all the attributes that Joshua needed to excel in his role. Joshua himself also took the time to learn valuable skills from Moses and ended up conquering more cities than Moses, thereby paving the way for the Israelites to possess their possessions. (Deuteronomy 31:7-8)
- Elijah and Elisha: Elijah was anointed by God to mentor Elisha at a time when Elijah’s strength and prophetic ministry were beginning to dwindle. Despite this, Elisha still faithfully submitted himself to be mentored by Elijah. He never ran ahead of his mentor. This shows that as a mentee, one must learn the act of submission to one’s mentor, even if one seems more knowledgeable. (1 Kings 19:19-21, 2 Kings 2:1-18)
- Paul and Timothy: Paul mentored Timothy, teaching him about the Christian faith and preparing him to become a leader early in life. He was very fundamental to Paul’s second and third missionary journeys.
- Barnabas and Paul: Barnabas played a very key role in ensuring that Paul learned the ropes quickly.
- Jesus Christ and His disciples: Jesus specifically chose twelve disciples and mentored them on diverse kingdom matters (Matthew 4-18). We have many other examples, but due to time constraints, we will stop here.
SEARCHLIGHT: Mentorship is quite fundamental as it enables the inexperienced to learn about what is obtainable.
PRAYERS: O LORD, connect me with the person whose life will positively impact mine.
