THE SOVEREIGNTY OF GOD’S WILL

TEXT: Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. (Matthew 6:10)

The will of God refers to the utmost desire and pleasure of God at a given time and over a given issue. Over every issue, we have our will, and there is also the will of God. Sometimes, our will may not be in tandem with what God desires. As true sons and daughters of God, our faith in God entails that we surrender or jettison our own plans for God’s will to take pre-eminence in our lives, having regard to the fact that God desires good and not evil for us. (Jeremiah 29:11).

Jesus, in His Sermon on the Mount, emphasized the pattern of prayer, and one of what He mentioned was “Thy will be done on earth”. When you make this statement unto God in prayer, it is a confirmation that you are handing over your preferences, desires, and cravings unto Him to be replaced by His.

WHY MUST WE DESIRE GOD’S WILL?

  1. God is omniscient. He knows the end from the beginning. Our own understanding is not sufficient to take us far, thereby making it necessary for us to be aligned with His will. He obviously wants the best for us.
  2. Alignment with God’s will is an assurance of protection and safety.
  3. His will is perfect and flawless. It may not show comfort or ease, but it is ultimately beneficial to us in the long run. ( Romans 12:2, Luke 22:42)

WHAT ARE THE FACTORS THAT CAN HINDER US FROM DOING THE WILL OF GOD?

  1. Fear and Trepidation: Sometimes, the will of God usually takes the form of a tedious assignment which we don’t find comfortable to do. Unfortunately, because they can’t see the greater picture, they act based on current perception.
  2. Worldly pursuits: In the vigorous pursuit of wealth and reputation, it may become difficult for a man to yield to the will of God, especially where it appears that the step jeopardizes one’s source of wealth.
  3. Impatience: Many want to trust the will of God, but are only ready to do so as long as God arrives at their own time. Meanwhile, God is never late. He sometimes delays in our own sight, but in the calendar of heaven, He is on time!

SEARCHLIGHT: When you surrender to the will of God, you won’t go astray.

PRAYER: My Father, strengthen me to do your will, in the Mighty name of Jesus Christ.
