TRUE RIGHTEOUSNESS

TEXT: “For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 5:20 (KJV)

True righteousness is not just about outward appearances or following a set of rules and regulations. It is about having a heart that is fully surrendered to God and living a life that is pleasing to Him.

In Matthew 5:20-21, Jesus teaches us that our righteousness must exceed that of the scribes and Pharisees, who were known for their strict adherence to the law. However, Jesus is not talking about a righteousness that is based on our own efforts or good works. Rather, He is talking about a righteousness that comes from God and is received by faith.

As believers, we must strive for true righteousness, not just outward righteousness. We must cultivate a heart that is fully surrendered to God and living a life that is pleasing to Him. This means being obedient to God’s will and living a life that reflects His character.

Furthermore, living a righteous life is also about pursuing peace with others. As Hebrews 12:14 reminds us, “Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord.” When we pursue peace and holiness, we demonstrate our commitment to living a life that is pleasing to God.

But what is the ultimate goal of living a righteous life? According to Matthew 5:8, it is to “see God.” Jesus says, “Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.” Living a righteous life is not just about following rules or regulations; it is about cultivating a heart that is pure and surrendered to God, so that we can have a deeper relationship with Him and ultimately see Him face to face.
