WHEN HEAVEN GOES SILENT (VOL. 1)
APRIL 13, 2026
TEXT: And when Saul enquired of the LORD, the LORD answered him not, neither by dreams, nor by Urim, nor by prophets. (1 Samuel 28:6)
One of the most frightening and scary things that can ever befall a believer is to experience a period of seeming silence from God. In seasons such as this, believers pray, fast, worship, and intercede, yet it seems as though the windows of heaven are shut.
King Saul found himself in this condition. Here was a man whom the Bible gave glowing remarks about at the point of his selection as the first king of the united Israel. He was highly favored with God and with men. So anointed was he that he could even speak to God without much prophetic intervention on the part of Samuel. They were in a battle, and the Philistines were gaining more and more ground, thereby leaving Saul in need of any available solution at all cost, out of desperation.
Out of this frustration, he turned toward the city of Endor. Here was a man whose faith in God was once unshaken to the extent that he ordered all witches and sorcerers to leave the land. Now, he was going back to them—technically returning to his own vomit. He sought answers from elsewhere.
KEY FACTS
- Silence can come at any time, even if you once heard God clearly. Everyone can experience silence at any given time (Psalms 22).
- Most times, the silence of heaven over a person’s life is often orchestrated by something in that person’s life. Saul’s case, for instance, was caused by repeated sins of disobedience and stubbornness. He disobeyed concerning the offering of sacrifice at Gilgal. He disobeyed concerning the assignment at Amalek. Over time, his heart became hardened. Thus, God is sometimes silent, not out of a lack of what to say, but out of displeasure with disobedience to earlier instructions.
- Silence from heaven is not an automatic avenue to try ungodly means. Have you examined your life and relationship with God? Do you think there is something about you that is not right and therefore needs attention? Saul could have prayed and sought ways of repenting, but he instead plunged into more sins.
SEARCHLIGHT: There is no alternative to God. Friends, family, and associates cannot suddenly become an alternative to God, especially in situations where God demonstrates silence.
PRAYER: O God, do not hide Your face from me, in Jesus’ mighty name.
