WHEN HUMAN HELP FAILS
AUGUST 31, 2025
TEXT: JOHN 5:1-10
KEY VERSE: The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me. (VERSE 7).
Today’s topic borders on the ever-present nature of our God, especially in times when human help has already failed. Sometimes, we tend to put too much of our hopes and burdens on our fellow humans, expecting them to come through for us in times of adversity and crisis. In the given text, we were told the case of a man who had been crippled for about 38 years and stayed with other maimed, infirm, and diseased persons at the pool of Bethesda. It was common then for the angel of God to come down occasionally to trouble that pool, and the first person to enter gets healed of any infirmity whatsoever. However, this man had no means of making it into the pool due to his paralysis. On a certain day, Jesus Christ came to that place and asked him a simple question, “Will thou be made whole?” The man replied thus: “I have no man to help me into the pool, and when I try to get there myself, another gets in before me”. It was so unfortunate that this man already trusted so much that only men can assist him in getting out of his plight. He failed to avert his mind to the fact that there was supernatural power somewhere that would actually take away his affliction. Thank God Jesus was undeterred by the man’s seeming faithlessness. He still healed the man miraculously.
It is a fact that humans can fail and disappoint at any given time. God is the only one who speaks and holds on to it. The man in this text believed so much in someone helping him into the pool, forgetting that the same person who sent the angel to trouble the water has not exhausted his reservoir of healing techniques. Anyone not sent to help you by God cannot do anything. Such a person might be wonderful and helpful to others, but you find out that he doesn’t even seem to care about you. It’s high time you turned back to God and sought His face to direct your real help/helper to you.
