WHEN MAN TRIES TO HELP GOD

WHEN MAN TRIES TO HELP GOD

TEXT: “And Sarai, Abram’s wife, took Hagar, her Egyptian maid, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife.” (Genesis 16:3)

In the passage from which our text is taken, we see Sarah (then Sarai) struggling to conceive, to no avail. This was despite God’s promise to Abraham that he would be the father of many nations (Genesis 15:5). The situation was so dire that Sarah, out of desperation, was forced to offer her housemaid, Hagar, to Abraham so that he could sleep with her and have a child. Unfortunately, Sarah made what was perhaps the greatest mistake of her life by taking this action. Firstly, it demonstrated her loss of trust in God (although one can hardly blame her for this). Secondly, she made the decision unilaterally, without involving God at all. She took matters into her own hands, and unfortunately for her, she created more problems that the world is still struggling to recover from today. When God is not involved in a decision, it is bound to backfire.

KEY POINTS
✅ In all we do, we must learn to avoid self-reliance.
✅ Wait patiently on God. Avoid running ahead of God’s time. Strictly follow God’s timing concerning every situation in your life.

SEARCHLIGHT: A decision taken in haste can have eternal consequences. Always consult God and wait for His direction before making a decision.

PRAYER: O Lord, help me trust in you in all my ways, in Jesus’ name.

BIBLE READING: Genesis 4-6, Luke 16
