FALSE CONFIDENCE

FALSE CONFIDENCE

TEXT: “Beware of dogs, beware of evil workers, beware of the mutilation! For we are the circumcision, who worship God in the Spirit, rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh.” — Philippians 3:2–3

False confidence simply refers to a deceitful sense of uprightness and certainty. It is a feeling that makes a person think that “he is” when “he actually isn’t.”

In modern parlance among Christians, it can refer to trusting in religious engagements, church attendance, religious customs and traditions, etc. Some trust in background, status, wealth, moral behaviour, charitable deeds, etc.

All in all, anything you place your assurance on apart from Christ is tagged false confidence.

Many believers tend to have this misplaced or erroneous feeling that once they carry out all the aforementioned religious acts, they are completely free and acceptable before God. They completely disregard spiritual codes and guidelines. Rather, they focus more on religiousness. Paul challenged the Philippians to be wary of where they place their trust. He urged them not to rely on outward religious dispositions but to focus on building a solid and genuine relationship with God.

From our text, Apostle Paul made use of the word “dogs.” Dogs here refer to people who operate outside of God’s covenant. Evil workers describe those who appear holy but scatter the gospel and turn it upside down. Mutilators refer to those who carnally insist on physical circumcision before one can obtain salvation.

Apostle Paul opened our eyes to the fact that religion is not the same as a relationship with Christ. You may go out of your way to do things in a spiritual manner (moderate dressing, charitable acts, joining the workforce in the church, etc.). However, it must be noted that we cannot be saved by good works alone, as they are merely evidence of salvation and not the authentic source of salvation itself (Titus 3:4–5, Matthew 7:22–23, 2 Corinthians 5:21).

SEARCHLIGHT: Christ is our only confidence; thus, our trust and confidence must be in Him constantly.

PRAYERS: O LORD, deliver me from spiritual complacency and egoism, in the mighty name of Jesus.
