PRAYING UNTIL HEAVEN RESPONDS 1

TEXT: “Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth for the space of three years and six months. And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth her fruit.” (James 5:17–18)
One of the notable challenges that people tend to have in Christian circles is the act of steadfastness in prayer, especially when nothing seems to be happening or when answers seem to be delayed. Many begin praying with trust and enthusiasm but, unfortunately, waver in their faith, especially when the problem is quite overwhelming.
However, through the experiences of certain people in the Scriptures, we can understand that we are supposed to maintain the same level of steadfastness for as long as possible in a bid to gain access to certain breakthroughs and testimonies.
From our given text, we have the account of one of God’s greatest prophets, Prophet Elijah, who prayed and withheld rain for three and a half years and also prayed fervently for the rain to be restored. While trying to lock the heavens, he only prayed a simple prayer, but when it was time to unlock what he had locked, he prayed more than ever before. For a long time, he kept sending his servant to check for possible signs of rainfall. It took a long time before his prayers were answered and the rain fell again.
Through his prayers, Elijah was able to shape and affect the course of a nation, despite being a man like us and not a spirit. God is still looking for believers who will pray through difficulties, challenges, and hurdles until breakthroughs manifest.
God does not answer prayer because of who we are but because of who He is. Spiritual effectiveness is available to every believer. Ordinary people can experience extraordinary answers through prayer because what God needs is not a prophetic or apostolic mind but a ready mind. Many of us greatly admire and praise Elijah’s impact but neglect his prayer life, forgetting that good things hardly come cheaply or freely.
NOTABLE FACTS ABOUT PRAYER
- Prayer must be focused and have a specific target. Many prayers are not answered because they are too vague and equivocal in nature. Effective prayers identify specific needs and present them before God.
- Effective prayers are offered in sincerity. They are prayers that engage the heart and not merely the lips. God values sincerity rather than eloquence.
- Prayer must be offered with faith. Faith is not hoping that God can answer; it is the act of believing that God will answer in line with His will. Any prayer offered with doubt is not likely to be answered, as Apostle James explicitly highlighted faith as a requisite factor while also likening a man who prays with doubt in his heart to the waves of the sea, driven and tossed by the wind (James 1:6–8).
SEARCHLIGHT: Prayer is a banking system with the Bank of Heaven. Keep praying, as you never know what you might be storing up for yourself, even in the midst of seemingly unanswered prayers.
PRAYER: O LORD, strengthen me to wait on You patiently, in the mighty name of Jesus Christ.
