WHEN GOD IS ABSENT IN THE BOAT
AUGUST 27, 2026
TEXT: Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the LORD keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain. (Psalm 127:1)
Today, we shall examine the importance and indispensable nature of God and His involvement in our respective lives. God is specific and intentional about everything that borders on our lives, including things that look so infinitesimal and trivial. Thus, except God is in the boat of one’s life and mission, chances are high that one may be toiling in vain. This text highlights the role of man in building but does not divorce it from God’s influence.
The expression “house” here is used metaphorically. It could symbolize marriage, career, family, academics, ministry, business, relationship, project, etc. All these things cannot be substantially built without the involvement of God. Human effort is necessary, but it is not sufficient.
There are many people who are embarking on the wrong projects and building on the wrong foundations. Unfortunately, you can’t build something worthwhile on a faulty/defective foundation. Many have gone far in various endeavours only to later painfully realize that what they had built was not offering them the right form of fulfilment. So, the main issue is not whether you are working hard but whether your hard work is tantamount to the will of God.
A good thing can still be built without God’s approval. Something may look so glorious on the surface but still not be approved by God. You can have a seemingly fruitful marriage but no spiritual foundation. You can have a career that is impressive, but you lack divine purpose or a sense of direction. You can have a seemingly prosperous ministry with no connection with God. The fact that something is successful does not mean it is supported by God, as God’s definition of success is sometimes distinct from man’s definition. Thus, we need God’s guidance before we “build” anything. God must be the foundation of whatever we build. (Matthew 7:24–27).
We can never be wiser than God. Anything that is not backed or protected by God is doomed to fail.
SEARCHLIGHT: Never alienate God from the boat of your life. Involve Him in everything.
PRAYER: O LORD, help me to stay connected to You and Your will, in Jesus’ name.
