THE POWER OF RIGHT ASSOCIATION AND INFLUENCE 1
MAY 18, 2026
TEXT: And he conferred with Joab the son of Zeruiah, and with Abiathar the priest: and they, following Adonijah, helped him. But Zadok the priest, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and Nathan the prophet, and Shimei, and Rei, and the mighty men who belonged to David, were not with Adonijah. (1 Kings 1:7-8)
Today’s teaching is eye-opening as to the importance of right influence and association. The persons you surround yourself with will either make or mar you. They will either lead you aright or lead you astray.
A full reading of the chapter where our text is taken from indicates that David was at the point of death, having governed Israel for a total period of 40½ years, including his different reigns over Judah in Hebron and over the entire household of Israel in Jerusalem. Adonijah, the king’s fourth son, exalted himself as the successor to the throne. In view of this, he started planning. He teamed up with some of his father’s men such as Abiathar, the second priest, and Joab, the army captain. These were not completely bad people in their day. However, their support was not divinely orchestrated, and their plans eventually collapsed.
Most people fail to understand the difference between human validity and heavenly validity. That you enjoy wide acceptance does not mean God is for you.
Adonijah was carried away. After all, he had one of Israel’s most brutal and skilled military officials in Israel’s history in his camp, as well as one of the most famous Israelite priests in history. He also had fifty men serving him. Yet, all these did not equate to the approval of heaven. (Matthew 7:22-23, Deuteronomy 13:1-3).
From time immemorial, God has always been known to speak and provide insight through tested and trusted vessels. Adonijah, however, neglected people like this in his self-imposed and short-lived reign. He didn’t walk with Zadok the head priest, Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the head of the army shortly before and later during Solomon’s reign. These were men who had spiritual understanding, discernment, and wisdom. Rather, he moved with one who was known for brutality, murder, short temper, unforgiveness, etc.
Destiny builders need not always be appealing to you. If care is not taken, you might even misinterpret their good intentions toward you. However, they will surely protect God’s plans for your life.
