THE DANGER OF LEANING ON HUMAN WISDOM 2

TEXT: 1 SAMUEL 27:1-12

KEY VERSE: “And David said in his heart, ‘Now I shall perish one day by the hand of Saul…'” (1 SAMUEL 27:1).

Yesterday, we started a topic that bordered on decision-making not backed by God. We shall round off the topic today.

MORE KEY FACTS

  1. Human wisdom can lead to compromise. When David got to the land of the Philistines in a bid to be finally free from Saul, he sought refuge with King Achish of Gath. Of course, they say that when you are in Rome, you must behave like the Romans. Having found himself in enemy territory, he obviously had to amend his principles to comply with their lifestyle. It is a risky adventure to be unequally yoked with unbelievers or to do things the way they do (2 Corinthians 6:14; Romans 12:2).
  2. Human wisdom creates complicated problems. David found himself in a complex situation when the Israelites and the Philistines went to battle. Being an Israelite but staying in the Philistines’ camp, he was compelled to march out with them in battle against his own people. Very odd! Thank God for the commanders of the Philistines, who chided the king and told David to go back to his base at Ziklag with his young men. It would have indeed been a very confusing situation (James 3:16-17).
  3. God’s grace is greater than our errors. Although David made a poor decision, God did not abandon him. God’s covenant and promises remain true and unchanging. This is not a license to sin. It simply highlights God’s mercy toward those who belong to Him (Romans 8:28; Lamentations 3:22-23). If you have made a decision outside God’s will, repent promptly and return to Him. God’s grace can redeem our failures when we turn back to Him in genuine repentance.

SEARCHLIGHT: As believers, we must resist the temptation to make decisions based only on what seems logical. A man’s heart plans his way, but the LORD directs his steps.

PRAYER: O LORD, help me to discern and identify opportunities and avoid traps, in Jesus’ mighty name.
