THE FAITH OF AN OVERCOMER (PART 2)

THE FAITH OF AN OVERCOMER (PART 2)

JUNE 11, 2026

TEXT: Hebrews 11:8–12

KEY VERSE: “By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise:” — Hebrews 11:9 (KJV)

The journey of faith is not always smooth. Many believers assume that once they answer God’s call, every obstacle will disappear and every promise will be fulfilled immediately. However, Abraham’s life shows that faith is often tested before it is rewarded. The faith of an overcomer is not only faith that begins well, but one that remains steadfast through trials, disappointments, and difficult decisions.

Soon after Abraham arrived in the promised land, a severe famine arose. Instead of remaining where God had placed him and seeking divine direction, he went down to Egypt. In fear, he relied on human wisdom instead of God’s guidance. This led him into trouble and nearly cost him his testimony, as he compromised by concealing the truth about Sarah.

Many believers face similar moments. We trust God in times of peace, but when pressure comes, we are tempted to take matters into our own hands. Fear often leads to decisions we would not make in spiritual strength. Yet overcoming faith trusts God even when circumstances are unfavourable and focuses on His unchanging control.

Despite Abraham’s failure, God did not abandon him. The Lord intervened and restored him. This reminds us that failure is not the end when we return to God in repentance. He is willing to restore and continue His work in us.

Another test came through his relationship with Lot. As their possessions increased, conflict arose between their herdsmen (Genesis 13:5–7). Abraham chose peace over advantage and allowed Lot to choose first. Lot chose by sight, selecting the fertile plains near Sodom (Genesis 13:10–11), while Abraham trusted God for what remained (Genesis 13:14–15).

Lot’s decision was based on appearance, but Abraham’s was based on God’s promise. Many mistakes in life come from living by sight rather than by faith (2 Corinthians 5:7). Overcoming faith always chooses God’s will above earthly advantage.

When Lot was taken captive, Abraham did not ignore him. He pursued and rescued him with courage (Genesis 14:14–16). After the victory, he refused the spoils of Sodom, choosing not to be enriched by anything that could take glory from God (Genesis 14:22–23). He understood that true blessing comes from God alone.

Life will always present tests—famine, fear, compromise, distraction, and shortcuts. But God uses these to strengthen our faith. The overcomer is not the one who never faces trials, but the one who remains anchored in God through them all.

SEARCHLIGHT: Faith grows strongest when it continues to trust God in the midst of life’s greatest tests.

PRAYER: Lord, strengthen my faith in times of trial and deliver me from fear and compromise. Amen.
